Do you like sourdough? Do you like dinner rolls? I present to you:

Sourdough Dinner Rolls

These are the fluffiest and softest dinner rolls I have ever made. I think it may have to do with the sourdough fermenting the flour overnight that brought the fluffiness to another level. Seriously, you won’t believe how soft and absolutely tasty these sourdough rolls are! This easy dinner roll recipe makes the best pull-apart dinner rolls I have ever had, and I have had a lot of dinner rolls in my life. Whenever I go to a place serving rolls with dinner, I eat about the whole basket. These rolls are no different—I woke up and had five for breakfast lol.

These are the perfect rolls to use for sliders, make sandwiches out of, or pair with a soup at dinnertime. I made these as a side for my beef stroganoff. I literally opened a roll, put the beef stroganoff on top of one half of the roll and ate it like that. So tasty and so easy to make! They have a buttery flavor with a hint of sourdough to them which make them easy to pair with almost any dish.

I loved how simple it was to make these as well. I made the dough at night, and let it rise overnight. You can also make the dough in the morning and allow it to rise throughout the day—probably the timelier option, but it worked for me making it at night before I went to sleep. The longer that you allow the dough to ferment, the sourer it will be. If you prefer a less sour taste to your dinner rolls, allow them to rise for 8 hours. If you like a sourer taste, allow them to rise for 24 hours. You can definitely taste the difference as I have done it both ways, and I prefer the longer ferment if I have time and work it into my schedule.

What ingredients do you need to make sourdough dinner rolls?

For this recipe, all you need is: sourdough starter, sugar, water, butter, salt, and flour. You have some easy dinner rolls with these simple ingredients!

How do you make sourdough dinner rolls?

Mix all of the ingredients in a standing mixer, knead, allow to rise, shape and place in a greased baking dish, allow to double, bake, and you’re done!

What are the benefits of sourdough?

By using a sourdough starter, you are allowing the starter that has gathered natural yeasts from its environment to raise the bread and break down the phytic acid in the grains. Because of the breakdown of phytic acid, more nutrients become bio-available to use when we consume it.

For this recipe, I had fed my sourdough starter the same day I used it in my recipe. A few hours after I let it rise, then I used it in my recipe when it was bubbly.

A sourdough starter is a must in the kitchen! They are fun to use in recipes. They make the best brownies and English muffins—yum!

Course Side Dish

Ingredients

  • 1 cup fed sourdough starter
  • 1/3 cup cane sugar
  • 1 1/2 cup warm water
  • 1/2 cup 1 stick of butter, melted
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 4-5 cups all-purpose flour

Instructions

  • Add all of the ingredients to a standing mixer with the dough hook attachment.
  • Knead together until the dough sticks together, is elastic, and doesn’t stick to your fingers.
  • Place a damp towel over the bowl and allow to rise 8-24 hours.
  • The next day, grease a 9x13 baking dish and divide the dough into 15 equal rolls. If you don’t have a 9x13 baking dish, that is okay. You can use an assortment of baking dish sizes, just make the rolls about the same size.
  • Allow to rise until doubled (about 1-2 hours.)
  • Preheat the oven to 350, place in the oven, and bake for 25 minutes or until the tops are golden brown.
  • Take out of the oven and brush with butter—the butter will melt on the tops of the rolls.
  • Enjoy!
